2009 Tzedakah Collective

Dear Friends,

For over a year we have heard daily news reports about how the economic crisis is destroying individuals, neighborhoods and even whole cities. Evidence of this hardship is all around us as we see increased usage of food pantries, high numbers of “for sale” signs in once-stable neighborhoods, and many people out of work.  While it is hoped that people in our own Minyan community have not been greatly affected, it is likely that we all know people who are struggling to make ends meet.

In the face of such overwhelming suffering, it is essential that we guard against feeling overwhelmed or believing that we are powerless to help those in need.  By making a donation to the Minyan Tzedakah Collective you can help alleviate the distress in our own community and around the globe.  This year’s ballot includes 14 groups – six are new, others are old favorites.  We believe they represent an interesting mix of local, national, international, Jewish and secular organizations that, in their own ways, make for

a more just, sustainable and healthier world.

As most of you already know, and for those who are new to the Minyan, the Tzedakah Collective is comprised of individuals/families who pool our tzedakah resources so that, as a community of caring, we can make meaningful contributions to a variety of organizations. The recipients of our tzedakah are democratically chosen via the enclosed ballot.  A contribution of any amount entitles each contributor/family group to one ballot.  In the past, contributions have ranged from $18 to over $1,000.

We urge you to give as generously as you can.  To do so please:

  1. Review the list of potential recipients and record your six votes on the ballot.  Please vote only once for any particular organization.
  2. Make your tax-deductible checks out to “Highland Park Minyan.”
  3. Use the self-addressed stamped envelope enclosed in your mailing to return your check and ballot.

Please return your ballot (attached below) no later than December 1, 2009.  Any checks received after that date will be returned.
