About the Highland Park Minyan Annual Tzedakah Collective

Our 2013/5774 Tzedakah Collective is now in full swing. Please check the information in the attachment at the bottom of  this page and also at the bottom of our Home Page. The attachment contains information on the candidate charities and procedures for casting your vote and for mailing the ballot and check. We need this by Monday, November 18th, 2013.
Our Tzedakah Collective is an annual opportunity for members of the Highland Park Minyan to have a group discussion about the needs in our community and beyond, and the greater impact that we can have by pooling our resources and making larger donations in the name of the Highland Park Minyan.  Each year, we nominate a number of charities that will be the potential recipients of our group donations.  Our members select the charities by voting for their preferred recipients at the time that they make their contribution to the Collective.  The total amount of money that we receive is divided equally, and contributed to the charities receiving the greatest number of votes.
Our procedure gives us an opportunity to help groups that may have a particular need in any given year, educates Minyan members about worthwhile charities to which they may want to make individual contributions, and educates individuals and groups about the Highland Park Minyan and our commitment to justice so that they will know that they have friends in their own community and beyond.
The Tzedakah Collective had an AMAZING year in 2012! We collected $7515.00 - our largest amount ever - from 38 individuals/families. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and to our chairperson, Lori Freedman, for the work she did to make this happen!

The following recipients of the 2012 Tzedakah Collective each received $835.00 along with a letter telling them about the Highland Park Minyan and the democratic process we use for voting on our contributions:

Amy Adina Schulman Memorial Fund
Arava Institute
Community FoodBank of NJ - Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund
Elijah's Promise
Jewish Social Service Committee of Highland Park & New Brunswick
Meals on Wheels New Brunswick
Reformed Church of Highland Park Indonesian Relief Fund
Shachen Tov
Women of the Wall

Our goal for 2013 is to raise participation in the Minyan to 100%, independent of the amount of each donation. As always, we try to introduce new and worthwhile groups to the Minyan membership. Throughout the year, if you hear of a group that you think would be worthy of our Tzedakah Funds, please send us an email with the name of the group and a brief description.  We will hold on to it until the next Tzedakah Collective, as we did for this year.
